Ogdensburg Soldiers in the Spanish-American War

Little has been written about the role of Ogdensburg soldiers in the Spanish-American War which took place in 1898. "The Splendid Little War" has become a footnote to many, but this war showed the world that the United States was a world power to be reckoned with. Yesterday I spoke to Ms. Drusilla Howland, who's grandfather fought in the Spanish-American War as an officer in the 202nd New York Volunteers. First Lt. Joseph Howland, later Captain of the 202nd, wrote about Cuba and took many photographs. With the opening of Cuba after decades it seems apropos to feature one of his letters home and some of his photographs. #ogdensburghistory #spanishamericanwar

  2. The all time"Imperial Power" belongs to England and now to China when it comes to global holdings. The SA war was fueled by the sensationalism and propaganda spread via Hearst and Pulitzer newspapers which lead to the phrase "yellow journalism". It was also dubbed the "little media war". The "beat" goes on via TV,"social Media" and newspapers. The 202nd were volunteers as are our modern day militia and should be remembered and honored.
