“VOTES FOR WOMEN” Reading and Discussion Group at SLCHA

Canton: “Votes for Women,” an adult reading and discussion series, is a partnership between the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, DeKalb Town Historian, Lisbon Town Historian and City of Ogdensburg Historian, in collaboration with the New York Council for the Humanities. Participants will meet at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association in Canton over the course of six sessions to discuss a variety of texts related to the women’s suffrage movement. Dr. Melissane Parm Schrems, Associate Professor of History and Coordinator of Native American Studies at St. Lawrence University will facilitate the discussions based on selected fiction and non-fiction readings. Participants in “Votes for Women” will explore the history of the women’s suffrage movement in our state and nation and discuss women’s – and by extension, our society’s – past, present, and future. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to learn about St. Lawrence County women who took an active role in the fight for women’s suffrage, including Helen Hinsdale Rich of DeKalb and Marion Sanger Frank of Ogdensburg. The program is free and open to the public, although pre-registration is required. The discussion group will meet at the SLCHA on six Saturdays from September thru December 2016, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm.
