Bread Pudding Recipe (Pain Perdu)

It's the time of year when many of us do a bit a baking. One of my favorite recipes that comes from an old family recipe is bread pudding (pain perdu). Back in the old days women baked their own bread, which didn't have the preservatives that we have nowadays. After the bread was stale it was used for a variety of dishes. Bread pudding is my favorite. It can be topped with whipped cream, maple syrup, rum sauce or vanilla cream sauce. Bread Pudding: Ingredients: 9-12 slices of stale bread 5 eggs 1 1/2c sugar 1 qt. whole milk cinnamon.

Beat eggs and 1c. sugar together, then mix with milk. Spray 13 x 9 pan with cooking spray. Cube bread, then place in pan. Pour egg mixture over bread, then push bread down lightly, so it soaks up egg mixture. Sprinkle 1/2 cup sugar on top. Sprinkle cinnamon on top. Put pan in another pan of water, then bake at 350 degrees for 45min.-60 min. It's done after a knife is inserted and comes out clean. Vanilla Cream Sauce: 2 c whipping cream 1 c sugar 2 T. flour 1/2 c butter 1 tsp vanilla extract Stir cream, sugar and flour in sauce pan. Add butter and cook over medium heat until mixture boils. Cook 3 minutes or until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Serve warm. #ogdensburghistory
