APHNYS is a 501(c)3 non-profit professional organization that represents the 1,600+ government-appointed historians in the state. As mandated by state law, every county and municipality in New York is required to have an appointed historian to document, preserve, interpret, and share the history of their communities. APHNYS is committed to ensuring that New Yorkers have access to quality educational experiences enriched by cultural heritage resources, and the organization's local historians are dedicated to serving their communities.

APHNYS welcomes new members to join the organization. Membership is open to anyone interested in the preservation of New York State's history, and one does not have to be a municipal historian to join. Members have access to a variety of resources and benefits, including professional development opportunities, networking with other historians, and advocacy for the preservation of New York State's history.
