What is it?

The Ogdensburg Heritage Houses map is a new self-guided tour of the historic homes that help tell Ogdensburg's story. It is now public and free for anyone to explore.

The map was created from the City of Ogdensburg's Heritage House program, which began in 1991. Each pin marks a home recognized for its historic or architectural significance.

Why is it important to document historic homes? Historic homes are more than old buildings. They are records of the people who built Ogdensburg, the work they did, and the neighborhoods they shaped.

Documenting them matters because:

Once a historic home is lost, its story is much harder to recover.

A clear record helps residents, researchers, and visitors understand what makes each neighborhood special. *It supports preservation — when we know what we have, we are better able to protect it. *It connects today's Ogdensburg to its past, house by house, street by street. This map puts that record in one place, where anyone can find it and follow it.

What is on the map? The map includes 71 properties, color-coded by designation:

Green — Heritage House (56): Homes recognized through Ogdensburg's Heritage House program.

Gold/Yellow — National Register (9): Properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dark Blue — National Historic District (6): Properties in Ogdensburg's National Historic District.

You can explore by street cluster — Ford, Caroline, Washington, and Franklin streets are especially rich — and plan a walking tour at your own pace.

A note for visitors: most of these are private homes. Please enjoy them from the sidewalk, and do not knock or trespass.

Start exploring, and see how much history is right in front of you, one historic house at a time.
